Danny Bowien's mysterious Mexican restaurant is a mystery no more: The chef tells Flo Fab that he hopes to open his Mission Chinese spinoff, Mission Cantina, at 172 Orchard Street on November 20. The chef explains: "We're really excited about what we'll be doing here...It will be our take on Mexican food. It's not going to be a taqueria, even though there will be tacos on the menu because we love tacos."
Danny and his crew will nixtamalize their own corn, and make their own tortillas and Oaxacan-style cheese. The menu will feature some rotisserie-grilled items, including a chicken stuffed with rice, as well as some large shareable dishes. And just like at Mission Chinese down the block, the restaurant will donate a percentage of the money made from some of the dishes to charity. Earlier this year, Bowien and his chefs Angela Dimayuga and Zach Swemle took a whirlwind tour of Mexico City for research.
It sounds like Mission-style burritos will not be on the menu. Repeat: no Mission-style burritos planned at this point in time. But, maybe Danny will change his mind before November 20 — it would be a fun call-back to the neighborhood where this whole Mission Chinese thing began.
