A lot of people think that the Health Department grading system needs some fixing, but Mayor Bloomberg, at least, takes those letter grades very seriously. As he told the audience at an event for the biopharmaceutical industry, "I would suggest: don't eat in a restaurant unless they have an 'A.'" And although he did say that he knows why restaurant owners are "bitching" about cleaning their kitchens, that was really just a joke about how he doesn't like to clean.
Much more seriously he said that since the new DOH regulations were put in place, "the cases of salmonella at our hospitals went down like a step function." As the Post points out, if you only eat in A-grade establishments, that narrows the dining options by about 4,500 restaurants.
