Carla Rzeszewski has stepped down from her position as the wine director at The Spotted Pig, The Breslin, and The John Dory Oyster Bar. The acclaimed sommelier has been working with the group for about four years. Former Scarpetta beverage director Jessica Brown was just hired as the wine director at the Ace Hotel and its restaurants, and the Spotted Pig's Scott Baker was promoted to the wine director at that restaurant. Owner Ken Friedman explains the transition:
Jessica Brown, she's going to be our wine director at the Ace Hotel. Also, the Ace lobby — it's a monster. Carla never really got all that involved in the lobby, but we realized that we have a captive audience in the lobby — there's so many events — so she's going to do that. Scott Baker at the Spotted Pig, he was really her best pupil ... so he's our wine director at The Pig.
Friedman continues:
We kind of decided not to replace Carla... Carla is such a hard act to follow. She's leaving to travel ... I'm hoping she'll come back. We're going to miss her, but we hope she'll come back. She's part of the family.Friedman also tells Eater that he's thinking about finding someone to work with the beer programs at his restaurants. So, if you're an ambitious beer geek, you might want to reach out.
