Several well-placed sources whisper that Abram Bissell, the departing chef de cuisine at The Nomad, will replace executive chef Gabriel Kreuther at Danny Meyer's The Modern. Kreuther is leaving at the end of the year to open his own restaurant apart from Union Square Hospitality Group, and The Nomad team just announced that Bissell will be stepping down from his post later this year.
Bissell's refined, but accessible cuisine is similar in a lot of ways to what Kreuther and his crew serve at The Modern. Bissell also started his New York career as a chef working under Kreuther at the Modern, and then he moved to Eleven Madison Park when it was owned and operated by Danny Meyer. So, this would be a homecoming, of sorts, and if Danny wants to reach for that fourth Times star and/or second Michelin star, Bissell might be the perfect collaborator.
When asked about the rumor, a rep for USHG told Eater: "We are actively speaking with several candidates right now." Expect an official announcement about the new chef before the holidays.
