In April, news broke that Keith McNally had plans to close Pastis at the end of the year so that the landlord could build on the space. McNally specifically told Gael Greene that the restaurant would be closed "for nine months" starting in January. But now Crain's reports that the restaurateur filed a notice with the Department of Labor indicating that all of his employees will be laid off after January 1. It sounds like there's a possibility that Pastis might not return.
When asked about the shuttering this afternoon, an employee at the restaurant told Eater the closure would be "absolutely temporary." Crain's estimates that the construction will take about 18 months. McNally and other tenants are apparently negotiating with the landlord about signing on for the new space, but nothing has been finalized yet.
Hopefully McNally will figure some way to keep Pastis where it is. The restaurant is one of the only good things about the Meatpacking District.
