Alamo Drafthouse Backs Out of the Upper West Side

Alamo Drafthouse, the beloved movie-theater-plus-restaurant chain from Austin, has nixed the plans for its Upper West Side location. The company began work inside the shuttered Metro Theater early last year, and had plans to open in 2014 with five screens, stadium seating, and full service dining and drinks. Now the Drafthouse has announced it is pulling out of that project, blaming post-Sandy reconstruction for construction costs that have "risen tremendously" since work first began on the space.

Work on the chain's Downtown Brooklyn location is still humming along, however, and that seven-screen mega project should open at City Point by 2015.
