Chef Ryan Skeen's latest project, 83 1/2, is now closed. The restaurant opened on the Upper East Side back in September with Skeen in the kitchen and former Daniel sommelier Jean-Luc Le Du in charge of the wine list. Its final service was last week.
Skeen says that the restaurant was getting some nice buzz and the critics were starting to check it out, but owner Vincenzo Mangiafridda decided to pull the plug on the project for reasons that nobody understands. Skeen tells Eater:
We have been fielding emails from confused customers all weekend who showed up to find the place closed. I have made multiple offers to purchase the restaurant or find a solution to whatever problem Vincent ran into, in hopes of keeping our great staff and customers on line, but have received yet again no response...This was hands down my favorite restaurant and I feel like my heart has been ripped out at the moment but the staff and myself are looking for a new space and trying to reach out to purveyors and customers to clean up the mess Vincent has just left.No word yet on what Skeen's plans are next.
