Michael Bao tells Eater that he has scrapped his plans for Bao, a "modern-classic" Vietnamese restaurant in the old Lafayette French Pastry space on Greenwich Avenue. The restaurant was originally slated to open in the fall, but Bao decided to sell the space when he was approached with an offer. He notes: "It was better off to sell it and keep the money than to try to make money in the restaurant business these days." This was slated to be his final NYC project before heading off to Vietnam. Now the Baoster is down to just a handful of Baoguettes and one BaoBQ.
No word yet on what Mikey has planned next, but it appears that the Golden Age of Bao has officially come to an end. It sure was fun while it lasted.
