Vanguard Wine Bar, Libertador, and More Now Open

1) Kips Bay: Le Bern alum Soa Davies is the chef at Vanguard Wine Bar, which quietly opened just before New Year's, according to the Commercial Observer. It's owned by Stefan Mailvaganam, a partner in Bar Carrera in Greenwich Village and Custom American Wine Bar in Williamsburg, and Davies's features small plates with American and French influences to match the wine list. 2) Cobble Hill: An Argentinian steakhouse called Libertador is now open at the corner of Henry and Baltic in Cobble Hill, notes Brownstoner. It's a sister restaurant to Libertador Parilla Argentina on the Upper East Side. Status: Certified Open; 158 Baltic Ave.

3) Astoria: Paul Gee's vet Stephen Menna opened a new Neapolitan pizzeria called Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana a week before Christmas, per Grub Street. The menu features 18 different pies, as well as salads, panini, and "fried treats" like calzone and stuffed mozzarella. Status: Certified Open; 36-08 Ditmars Blvd., 718-278-4800.

4) Upper West Side: Zagat learns that a New Jersey-based bagel chain called Simit + Smith has opened on West 72nd, with plans to open 20 shops in New York City. The chain sells simits, which are a variation on the bagel popular in Greece, Turkey, and elsewhere. The next location will be on John St. in the Financial District.
