Bay Ridge Rallies to Keep Hipster Beer Garden Out

New, 34 comments

First they took Williamsburg. Bushwick and Gowanus were the next to go. And now the hipsters have their eyes set on bucolic Bay Ridge, with plans to invade the neighborhood with their horrible beards, tacky plaid shirts, and worst of all, a beer garden. But Bay Ridge residents are fighting back against the planned opening of The Lockyard, a bar and restaurant that Tommy Casatelli is planning to open in his uncle's old locksmith store that he once worked at as a child. Casatelli, who also owns new neighborhood places like Kettle Black and Ho'Brah Taco Joint, says that The Lockyard will be a well-run establishment just like his other restaurants. But his neighbors are not convinced, and boy are they worried. Why?

Here are some of the reasons that the residents are anti beer garden:

· Amanda Tigio, who lives next to the planned backyard, is afraid of noise, saying "I bet 20-somethings would be an even more of a late night crowd, so that perpetuates my fears about the sound . . .I can hear when a buzzing alarm goes off next door."

· Marisa Falero is concerned over property values, asking, "what's going to happen to the value of that house, if there's a beer garden in back of it full of drunk people?"

· Elizabeth Pabian believes that Bay Ridge is for old people and should stay that way, saying "this idea of bringing a young crowd from Williamsburg and Park Slope, it's unacceptable."

Unfortunately for these three and the other 29 neighbors who signed a petition in protest of the Lockyard, the Community Board unanimously supported the liquor license application and the beer garden is planning to open sometime in June, 2013.
