M. Wells Dinette at MOMA PS 1
22-25 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City
Projected Opening Date: September 27
M. Wells is back in action. All summer, Sarah Obraitis and Hugue Dufour have been working on M. Wells Dinette, their new gourmet cafeteria (gastro-teria?) inside MOMA PS 1 in Long Island City. The project has encountered numerous delays (original projected opening date was January 2012), but now a receptionist at the museum tells Eater that next Thursday is the big day. Pictures from preview lunches indicate that Dufour is serving a menu of entirely new dishes here, but they look just as bizarre and decadent as the ones offered at the original M. Wells.
The menu will most likely include a whipped butter and caviar sandwich, a flan made with foie gras, a deconstructed clam chowder, and a marrow and escargot tart. Is New York still hungry for this kind of decadent, over-the-top, every-day-is-your-birthday cuisine? Or has the city's palate softened in the year since M. Wells closed? Only time will tell. But know that every critic and food blogger in this city will have to try this place in the first week.
After Dufour and Obraitis get M. Wells Dinette off the ground, they will switch gears and work on their catamaran steakhouse. That might open in 2013.
