At least according to the Vendy Awards, the best food truck in New York is Eleazar Perez's Red Hook food truck, Piaztlan Authentic Mexican. Perez, who serves Central Mexican cuisine from her truck at the Red Hook ball fields, won the top award at this year's Vendys, held this past Saturday on Governors Island. This is the third time in four years that a truck from the ball fields has taken home the Vendy Cup, the annual awards' top prize.
The Vendy Awards are both a street food festival and a fundraiser for the Street Vendor Project, a non-profit that advocates for vendors' rights in the five boroughs. Other big winners this year include Smorgasburg's Filipino vendor Lumpia Shack, which won the Best Market Vendor category, and Midtown favorite Cinnamon Snail, which won the People's Taste Award. Melt Bakery and Phil's Steaks also took home awards, in Best Dessert and Rookie of the Year, respectively.
