The owner of Mama's Bar on East Third Street is taking over the neighboring Mama's Food Shop space, which has been empty since the 15-year-old comfort food spot closed this summer. The owner of the similarly-named bar, Richard Freedman, didn't own Mama's Food Shop, though he was the landlord at the location.
Now, Freedman tells the Local EV that he's planning to open his own comfort food restaurant in that location. The working name is Mama's Eats, but even if that changes the restaurant will be called, as Freedman says, "Mama's something or other."
Freedman tells the Local EV that he's planning to upgrade the kitchen and the bathrooms and reopen this fall. In many ways, Mama's something or other will be like Mama's Food Shop, though Freedman plans to make several changes to former owner Jeremiah Clancy's menu. The fried chicken and meatloaf will stay, joined by other Southern staples like shrimp and grits. The restaurant will have table service (unlike Mama's Food Bar) and will serve brunch on weekends with the kitchen staying open until 3 or 4 a.m.
