In June, the president of macaron empire Maison Ladurée announced that the company's most "beautiful location in the world" would open this fall in the Barolo space on West Broadway. Barolo has remained open for business in spite of an anticipated September opening of Maison Ladurée, but today Crain's New York reports that the 25 year-old Soho restaurant has filed for bankruptcy protection and is facing eviction.
According to court filings, Barolo's assets and debt are listed at around $10 million and the restaurant pays $110,000 a month in rent, which the landlord says is chump change for the space. Perhaps the retail shop, tea room, full service restaurant, private rooms, and garden terrace that Maison Ladurée has planned will be able to bring in that kind of dough.
