A food truck war is flaring up at the Travers Park playground in Jackson Heights. The Parks Department issued one permit to a Mr. Softee truck that allows the truck to vend at the playground, but that hasn't stopped rival ice cream vendors from parking in the area. City Councilman Daniel Dromm tells the Daily News: "These ice cream truck turf wars have had a negative impact on the community because we have to deal with their negative behavior.”
The problem here is that the vendors pump gas fumes into the space where the kids play, and also, the trucks blast their jingles till late at night. One vendor claims that he needs to sell ice cream near the playground to turn a profit, noting: "The illegal vendors plus the [Health Department] inspectors — they’re killing our business...We work till 10 or 11 o’clock at night to make some money.” A rep from the Department of Environmental Protection urges neighbors to call 311 any time they're annoyed by the vendors.
