It's on: Sugar & Plumm Purveyors of Yumm, the sweets shop and café by Lamia Jacobs, opens tomorrow on Amsterdam Avenue. This is the growing chainlet's first Manhattan location?the first Sugar & Plumm opened in Paramus, N.J. last year, and two more New York locations are on their way. The concept here is fairly simple but has three components: candies and confections available in a retail space; cakes, pastries and chocolates developed by pastry chef Pichet Ong; and a café menu with savory items by Steven Ferdinand and dessert by Ong. That menu was still being finalized when Eater dropped in this afternoon, but reps confirmed several items that'll be on there, including chicken and waffles, pulled pork and waffles, lobster rolls and shrimp and grits.
Of course, 4,300 square foot space met a whole lotta opposition in the neighborhood, inspiring an entire blog called Stop Sugar and Plumm, which calls it a "suburban transplant chain store." And late last year, the Landmarks Preservation Commission told the store to "tone down" some of the more "garish" design points. As a result of the encounter with the LPC, they and designer David Rockwell redesigned the store to better a photo of the building from 1930.
Two more Sugar & Plumms are in the works as well, with a location coming to Bleecker Street and another to Downtown Brooklyn. The Upper West Side location opens tomorrow morning and will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
