Filmmaker Casimir Nozkowski made an excellent short documentary about Williamsburg staple Caffe Capri. The doc focuses on owners Sarah Devita and Joe Rinaldi who opened the shop on Valentine's Day in 1974 and have been serving cannoli and extremely strong iced coffee to the neighborhood ever since.
Beyond the coffee, Devita and Rinaldi provide an ever-changing neighborhood with stability and a sense of nostalgia. In an interview with Jeremiah's Vanishing New York today, Nozkowski notes:
The owners of Caffe Capri had so many great stories about former customers who used to come in, who lived and worked in the neighborhood...A nice personal establishment like Caffe Capri gives a neighborhood color and character that I think ultimately brightens the community.Of his contribution to the neighborhood, owner Joe says "I have so many stories in my life, but this is the best story I have because I enjoy what I do."
