Fresh off their smash hit Catch and their national expansion efforts, the EMM Group is busy building out its newest 20,000 square foot multistory pleasure palace in the former BLVD and Crash Mansion spaces on the Bowery. In a bit of a surprise, Eater learns that EMM will be bringing on Travis Bass, the current king of downtown nightlife, to oversee the still unnamed space's basement nightclub. EMM partner Eugene Remm confirms the rumor to Eater, saying they are in discussions and that they "are excited to be working with Travis."
Eater's little birdie reports that the goal is to have Bass operate the space in a similar fashion as Nur Khan's partnership with the Strategic Group in running the Electric Room at the Dream Downtown Hotel, where Bass will be allowed to manage operations, book DJs and talent, and coordinate the crowd while EMM operates its Latin shareable plates restaurant, lounge, jazz club, bakery, and luncheonette upstairs.
When asked by Eater about his partnership with a main stream nightlife operation like EMM, Bass said it was the other way around, and that he would "be bringing EMM into the street." He also said that his extremely popular INGA events at 141 Chrystie would no longer occur so that he could focus all of his energy on getting the 199 Bowery project with EMM ready to go. He did promise to hold a special summer series before the new venue opens.
