Yesterday, brothers Eric and Bruce Bromberg — the pair behind all of the Blue Ribbon Restaurants — opened their newest baby, Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya, on the Lower East Side. The food here is an updated version of the duo's other sushi concepts, with sections on the menu for sushi, sashimi, and izakaya-style plates. Other offerings include eight varieties of fried rice, their signature fried chicken served either half or whole, and ten types of skewers. Expect communal tables, and lazy-Susans for easy sharing.
The Brombergs opened the first Blue Ribbon 20 years ago at 97 Sullivan St., following that with their first sushi location three years later in 1995. Now the team runs more than eight locations, including a spot in Vegas, and they run the restaurant at Brooklyn Bowl. This newest venue is a marriage of concepts with the added bonus of izakaya-style dining. For now, they're open seven days a week from 5 p.m.–2 a.m.
