A little over a year ago, first-time restaurateurs Tamer Hamawi, Emelie Kihlstrom, and Elise Rosenberg opened their charming Brooklyn Heights bistro Colonie. And earlier this week, they expanded with Gran Electrica in Dumbo, the first of two new projects they've got planned with executive chef Brad McDonald. The menu features regional specialties from all over Mexico, including tacos, quesadillas, mariscos, salads, and traditional pastries for dessert.
Most of the individual items like the tacos are all around $5, and bigger plates like the chicken mole and pork ribs are priced around $17. The menu here is a collaboration between McDonald and chef Sam Richman, formerly of Jean Georges, and they're making everything from scratch, including the tortillas and the chorizo.
The space is airy and somewhat rustic kind of like Colonie, and a few of the walls are lined with black and white Dia de Los Muertos-inspired wallpaper. To drink, the bar is serving up cocktails made with small-batch mezcals and tequillas, and squeezed-to-order juices. Gran Electrica is now open for dinner. Take a look around, and check out the full menu below.
