Benares, San Matteo, Kitchen M, and More Certified Open

1) Midtown West: Restaurateur Inder Singh, a former owner of Devi and Baluchi, has partnered with Tamarind chef Peter Beck to open Benares, a restaurant celebrating the diversity of Indian cuisine. The restaurant holds 89 seats and is lined with framed saris of Singh's female relatives. Status: Certified Open; 240 W 56th St., 212--397-0707.

2) Upper East Side: Howard Cheng, formerly of Guy & Gallard, is opening up his own restaurant, Kitchen M, on Madison Avenue. Mr. Cheng hopes to provide the Upper East Side with well-priced prepared foods such as sandwiches, quiches and pastas.Status: Certified Open; 1375 Madison Avenue, (212)-369-7600.

3) Midtown: Tom Colicchio's sandwich chain 'wichcraft just opened two mobile carts within the New York Public Library's landmark building at 5th Avenue and 42nd Streets. The carts will be located in Astor Hall and in the central corridor on the second floor of the Schwarzman Building. It is the first time food and beverage will be offered on a continual basis inside the building. Status: Certified Open; New York Public Library, 5th Avenue at 42nd St.

4) East Village: EV Grieve notices that San Matteo Pizza and Espresso Bar opened Monday on St. Mark's Place near Avenue A. They are serving sandwiches made from pizza bread, calling panuzzo. Status: Certified Open; 125 St. Marks Place, 212-979-8000.

5) Midtown: Grocer and prepared food spot Balducci's (which hasn't been seen in Manhattan in six years) has just opened a new Balducci's on the Go shop in the Hearst Tower at 56th Street and 8th Avenue. They're serving breakfast and lunch. Status: Site says it's open but PR puts the opening at March 7; 301 West 56th St., 646-350-4195.

6) Midtown: Midtown Lunch reports that a new branch of falafel spot Soom Soom opened yesterday on 46th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. Status: Certified Open; 46th between 5th and 6th.
