Williamsburg Residents Come Out Against Local Gay Bar

New, 24 comments

Community Board 1 soundly rejected the liquor license renewal application for Metropolitan Bar, as concerned neighbors came out en masse to lobby against the renewal for the gay friendly bar. Those opposed to the renewal said they could care less about the sexual orientation of the clientele, but cared tremendously about the noise the bar patrons make all night in the backyard.

Metropolitan Bar is supposed to close the backyard at 11 PM on weeknights and 1 AM on the weekends, but neighbors say the outdoor area remains open all night and leads to excess noise and cigarette smoke lasting past 4 AM. One neighbor even said he had to hose the sidewalks down in front of the bar to get rid of the urine smell. Classy! But Metropolitan Bar customers shouldn't fear too much — the CB vote is only advisory and the SLA isn't known to put operating bars out of business.
