The final nail was driven into the coffin of great East Village dive Holiday Lounge last night as Community Board 3 approved the new owners' plans to open a pub there in its place. Robert Ehrlich, the founder of Pirate's Booty and its related snacks, and Barbara Sibley, the owner of La Palapa nearby, proposed a plan to open a new restaurant/tavern offering local, regional cuisine at 75 St. Marks Place (the building Ulrich recently bought). They said they hope their restaurant will echo the restaurants that have disappeared, with a menu offering those foods New Yorkers "miss" like Shepard’s Pie and fish 'n’ chips.
The board approved the transfer to their proposed restaurant with the stipulation that they close their windows and doors at 10PM—they have plans to install french doors that will open to the street during nice weather. Ulrich did not win the rights to the Holiday name when he bought the building, so he has yet to determine what this new venture will be called.
