The Parks Department hosted a walk through of the Tavern on the Green site today for operators interested in running the venue in 2013 following a massive scale-down this year, and believe it or not, the storied space is still attracting the big names. Really big names. Tribeca kingpin Drew Nieporent took the bait, as did people from Mario Batali's restaurant group B&B Hospitality, Upper West Side vet Bill Telepan, and reps from the '21' Club, the Glazier Group, City Winery, and Legends Hospitality Management, the people behind the food at Yankee Stadium. Quite the motley assemblage.
As reported earlier, the new operator will keep the name but the new Tavern on the Green will be a shell of its former self, catering to locals in the neighborhood, park-goers, even morning joggers in a more casual setting. The Crystal Room is gone, as are the lights hanging from the nearby trees. But the pared down nature is more of a selling point for restaurateurs like Telepan who noted the new space is "more manageable than it was before."
Applications are due by the end of March.
