Francis Garcia and Sal Basille, the cousins behind the wildly popular Artichoke pizzeria mini chain, recently shuttered their 14th Street sweets parlor Led Zeppole and turned it into a sandwich shop called Chubby Mary's. Those cannoli and fried Oreo cookies were tasty, but this new concept is perhaps better-suited to the bar-hopping crowds that flood East 14th Street on the weekends. Will this new shop serve "the best heros in town," as advertised on the sign? Hard to say. But Sal and Francis know a thing or two about gut-busting sandwiches — their East Village shop This Little Piggy Had Roast Beef is an underrated drunk food gem. Chubby Mary's opened last night. Do send any early reports our way.
