Coney Island institution Denny's Ice Cream Shop has shuttered for good after accruing $50,000 in Hurricane Sandy damages. Since 1978, Denny's has been a go-to for funnel cakes, soft-serve custard, and the stand's famous banana-pistachio twist. Owner Dick Zigun bought the building last year with plans to turn most of it into a branch of his Coney Island USA Museum but quickly realized how loyal Denny's customers were and had yet to make the transformation when Sandy hit. "People like the ice cream, and wanted to keep buying it," Zigun told the Brooklyn Paper, "I'm as much of a fan of banana-pistachio ice cream as anybody else. I'm going to miss it."
Zigun mentions the possibility of an indoor paintball court coming to the space next summer but plans to rent most of it out. "Hopefully, there will be ice cream there someday," he says, "hopefully banana-pistachio twist."
