2012_10_bkgrangeapiary.jpgThe Brooklyn Grange's apiary at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the city's largest commercial beekeeping operation, was one of Sandy's many victims. Over 25 hives — around 1 million bees — were destroyed in the storm. The group recently raised over $22,000 through a Kickstarter campaign which was intended to help produce 1,000 pounds of organic honey a year, pollinate 60,000 acres of surrounding area, and breed bees that would thrive in NYC conditions. 10 hives located on their Queens rooftop farm survived the storm.
