Giant news from clubland, as word comes through that the owners of Space, the legendary club from Ibiza, are planning to open a 13,000 sq ft club on the far west side of Midtown. The club that is synonymous with the summer party scene that invades the Spanish island will open in the space that was meant to be the New York outpost of Sankeys from the U.K., a project that never was able to get off the ground. The new club is expected to open sometime next year. This news surely has the local nightlife leaders nervous, as they have been able to control the DJ scene here as New York nightlife has incorporated EDM into the business model these past few years.
Today also comes word that the EMM Group has partnered with Pacha on the soon-to-open FINALE space. That means that they have brought in multiple partners to operate the multiple club spaces in the multi-level enterprise, leaving the food operation as the only piece that they have complete control over. How will Pacha play downtown? We will find out next week when FINALE opens with Heidi Klum's annual Halloween bash.
Marquee's planned relaunch as a palace for EDM is moving ahead, with plans to reopen early in January with Tiesto, who is rumored to be some sort of partner in the project. Also, the old District 36 space, a horrible club that just happens to be fully licensed and have a world class sound and light system, is on the market. This presents another opportunity for an out-of-town club to try and break into the NYC market in an easy way.
