It was announced late last year that longtime restauranteurs Marc Packer and Rich Wolf of the Tao Group had beat out a bunch of competitors in a battle to take over the Hiro Ballroom and Matsuri spaces at the Maritime Hotel, with Packer saying that their plan was to open an unnamed restaurant in the space sometime in 2013.
Multiple sources tell Eater that Packer and Wolf are planning to open a downtown outpost of Tao in the space. The original Tao opened eleven years ago on 58th Street and soon represented the gold standard of the clubstaurant trend. From what we hear, this new Tao will hold close to 400 seats, a massive undertaking in today's current restaurant environment, and will align nicely with the owners' plans to ramp up expansion of the brand across the globe. Neither Packer or Wolf have responded to Eater requests for comment.
