Sad news for bagel fans today: a city marshal seized the last remaining location of H & H Bagels. The 46th Street space will now be turned over to the landlord, and the shop is closed for business. The famed bakery filed for bankruptcy protection last summer, and in October, a judge ruled to allow the eviction proceedings to move forward, so this really doesn't come as a surprise.
The hard times for H & H started back in 2010, when the owner was indicted for tax fraud. In June of last year, the Upper West Side location shuttered, leaving the 46th street branch as the only active production and retail facility. The owner is apparently talking to investors in the hopes of reopening the shop, perhaps at a new location on the Upper West Side.
