Mega-developer Related Companies and burger evangelist Danny Meyer announce today that the real estate firm has taken a partnership stake in Meyer's catering and events company Union Square Events. Among other national and international projects, they will be working together to provide all food and restaurant offerings for the ginormous West Side construction Hudson Yards, which, when completed, will included 13 million square feet of commercial, residential, and cultural buildings on a platform atop a 26-acre site.
For those unfamiliar with the development, it's envisioned to include 5,000 residences, 6 million square feet of office space, a 1 million square foot retail center with a two level space for restaurants, markets, cafes, and bars, a hotel, a school, a cultural space, and 14 acres of open space. Union Square Events—which handles all of Meyer's catered events and all of his stadium concessions— will be in charge of operating new eateries and cafes, throwing events, and creating special dining spaces for Hudson Yards tenants.
So it's quite the deal. Beyond Hudson Yards, Related hopes to bring Union Square Events to more sports stadiums and arenas across the country and perhaps the world. The founder just so happens to own the Miami Dolphins, so that's a start. Partners tell Bloomberg Business Week they plan to double the sales of Union Square Events in the next three years as they expand with Related.
