Last week rumors that the EMM Group—the folks behind resto-clubs Abe & Arthur's and Catch and uptown's Lexington Brass—were seeking to open a new project at 199 Bowery in the old BLVD space were confirmed. And last night Community Board's SLA Licensing Committee heard and approved the plans for the space.
The EMM partners are seeking to open a bakery and luncheonette with a sidewalk cafe at the front of the space that will be open from 6 AM until midnight. Behind said bakery will be a restaurant with three bars, DJ music, and a 4 AM closing time. The main floor restaurant in the 20,000 square foot space will, as reported, serve shareable Asian-fusion small plates. The basement will feature a small stage, host live jazz acts, and boast a 1920's vibe.
The EMM Group did a fair amount of neighborhood outreach prior to the meeting, already winning over some condo boards and block associations in the area. And to sweeten the deal for the persnickety CB3 members, reps promised tight security and a 24 cleaning staff to deal with the sidewalks and they agreed to freeze and compress all garbage. Given this and the fact that the space has been long abandoned and this spot will employ 200 people, the board gave it the green light.
Stay tuned for more Community Board 3 coverage later today.
