New York City is home to a lot of restaurants, and among them are hidden gems the majority of New Yorkers just aren't unearthing. To help guide us to these potential discoveries, we've enlisted some of our city's many food luminaries to share with us their under the radar recommendations for Dining Confidential.
The Bark Hot Dog proprietors, Brandon Gillis and Josh Sharkey, love the neighborhood spot Chavela's. Good prices over there, and hangover busting foods to boot.
"There really aren't many options for good authentic Mexican in the Park Slope area unless you get to Sunset Park or the Red Hook Ballfields. That was until Josh and I discovered Chavela's in Crown Heights a few years back. At the time, the place was literally a hole-in-the-wall (they have since moved to bigger digs on Franklin Ave). Since they weren't in our delivery area we used to meet them at the corner for pick-ups. It's that good.
At this point, we've tried everything on the menu and really haven't found a loser yet. Start with the guacamole which is perfectly made all the time, the trio of salsas, and the ensalda nopales. Finish up with the chiles relleno con queso and chorizo, the queso fundido, or the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. Whatever you do, just keep the trio of salsas on the table for mixing with your dinner.
And if you found that you've overdone it on Friday night , the chorizo & huevo torta (Torta Mananera) will pretty much extinguish any hangover known to man."
