Welcome back to The Bib, food52 and Eater's first ever restaurant competition, where notable New Yorkers whittle down a list of New York's best new restaurants. Every day during the Bib, one of 15 chosen judges will explain why one restaurant, narrowed down from a giant list of '09 and '10 openings by our Bib Panel, defeated the other in a comparative tasting.

So far, The Awl's Choire Sicha advanced M. Wells, musician Brian Chase advanced Maialino, writer Regina Schrambling compared meals from Ma Peche and Minetta Tavern, actress Zoe Kazan moved Marea forward, College Humor co-founder Ricky Van Veen favored Kin Shop over Takashi, and yesterday WSJ Magazine Editor-in-Chief Deborah Needleman picked Locanda Verde over ABC Kitchen. Today, fashion designer and Tommy Hilfiger consultant Peter Som weighs in on Vandaag and Red Rooster.

He writes of Vandaag, "Drinks at Vandaag -- eye-popping in their inventiveness. No standard issue Cosmo or Mojito here. These drinks were clearly invented by a master mixologist. I opted for the ‘'Eh What's Up Doc,' a drink featuring — yes, you guessed it — carrots. Not only carrots, but chickweed infused aquavit, velvet falernum, lemon, celery bitters and egg white." And of Red Rooster, "The coffee and doughnuts were almost too much of a good thing: tennis ball-sized, coffee cream-filled wonders with a dollop of vanilla whip on top. One bite was enough for me! Lord, is that my waistband button popping off?"
