Classic Waverly Restaurant Gutted for Renovation, Expansion

First, the bad news. Waverly Restaurant, a classic diner on Waverly and 6th Avenue, was completely gutted yesterday, and today workers are still in the space clearing out almost all of its contents. Writes a worried reader, "I’m concerned that the legendary diner is lost forever. Why would you try to fix something that ain’t broke? Doesn’t look good to me."
The good news? A sign in the window says they're just closed for renovations. And shopkeepers in the area tell Eater that the restaurant is expanding into the former Waverly Wines space next door and will reopen in about a month. According to their architect's site, it will be the first renovation of the restaurant in 30 years, and when completed, "The interiors will be fully renovated keeping the original atmosphere, wile modernizing and enlarging the space."
