New, 9 comments

Some sad news today: Ray Deter, the owner of the D.B.A. bars in the East Village and Williamsburg, died over the weekend as a result of injuries sustained in a bike accident. He was 53. The accident occurred last Monday, when Deter was hit by a silver Jaguar at the corner of Canal and West Broadway. On Sunday night his wife updated the D.B.A. Facebook page with this message:

This evening we say goodbye to our dear friend Ray & wish him peace in his place of rest. We remember him as a pioneer, a community-maker, a father, partner, & friend. He touched countless people & his loss is felt far and wide. ... Details of his memorial ~ the celebration of his life will be posted soon. Thank you for all your love and kind words.
Friends and customers are dropping their remembrances of Deter on the Facebook page. In addition to the two bars in NYC, he also operated a D.B.A. in New Orleans.
