On Friday, Eater LA reported that major LA hospitality group SBE is investing in a nationwide expansion of local favorite Umami Burger, plus its sibling concepts, UMAMIcatessen, Red Medicine, and 800°. According to Umami creator Adam Fleischman, the first phase of their expansion will bring the burger chain to other parts of California, and the second phase will include outposts in New York, Miami, and Houston. Fleischman tells Grub Street, "We should be doing stuff in NYC by late 2012."
New York certainly has its fair share of burger chains, but we don't have anything quite like Umami Burger — the menu has ingredient combos that prominently feature"the fifth taste," the dining rooms have a stylish somewhat eco-chic vibe, and most dishes are priced between $10-$17.
As a part of this new deal, Fleischman retains control of Umami Restaurant Group and will maintain his title as owner/CEO.
