While the Strategic Tao Group has been keeping themselves busy with the pool bar, Ph D and Marble Lane projects at the new Dream Downtown, they have been holding back a few additional spaces. One is the much discussed basement lounge that has now been named the Electric Room, and in a bit of a shock, will be run by Nur Khan. If you recall, Khan returned from a nightlife hiatus to become the impresario behind Rose Bar at Ian Schrager's Gramercy Park Hotel. But after a lengthy and successful four year stint, decided to branch out on his own to open Kenmare and a relaunch of Don Hill's, which flamed out quickly. Now Khan is back in a management role, overseeing another exclusive room on behalf of someone else. But what exactly is he managing?
The Electric Room is tucked away in the bowels of the Dream Downtown hotel and accessed by an interior staircase near the hotel's elevators bank for the roof club. The room is small, with a capacity of less than 100 people. During a preview tour of the hotel, Strategic partner Noah Tepperberg described the room as the Dream's version of SubMercer. But unlike that space, which is full of nooks and crannies and broken into multiple rooms, Electric Room is more comparable to the first floor of Avenue, a high ceilinged, column free rectangle that will have a series of tables on either wall and a small dancing space in the middle.
When we asked Tepperberg his plans for the space, he mentioned that he would be reaching out to the downtown crowd to operate what he saw as perhaps the most exclusive space in New York. Hiring Khan certainly is that. What's even more astounding is that the Strategic Group has consolidated many of its former competitors as partners as employees. Who will they bring on next?
