Back in November, news broke that hip Soho taqueria/hidden bar La Esquina was expanding to Williamsburg by taking over the defunct Relish diner space on Wythe Ave. And now, reps write in with some updates on what's going down on the other side of the river.
Called Cafe de La Esquina at Wythe Diner (rolls off the tongue!), the new outpost will open mid-summer and will feature a taqueria, a cafe, a back dining room, and an outdoor garden. The cafe will take up the front portion of the restaurant, which Relish fans will recall features a long bar with stools and booth seating along the windows. The dining room will lie beyond the bar in the back portion of the restaurant, while the taqueria is being built as an extension to the 1950's landmarked structure.
Chef Akhtar Nawab will serve much of what's on the menu at the original but will add in a new "finger food" section and a daily and seasonal specials section. The taqueria upfront will offer, much like the original, tacos, sandwiches and salads to go. Also expect: cocktails, sangrias, shaved ice in the summer, and a long tequila and mezcal list. Stay tuned for more as the opening approaches.
