Well it's not a surprise, but it is worth mentioning. The permits for the full demolition of famed East Village dive Mars Bar are filed and approved by the city.
Mars Bar's building is being torn down to make way for a new 12-story, 60-unit apartment building that will include affordable housing as well as market rate condos. The construction should take at least two years once the building is demolished, and when squeaky new Mars Bar reopens, the owner says it will be three or four times the original size. Of course it will be a whole new entity altogether, but here's hoping he actually does go through with it and reopens.
