At last night's Community Board 3 meeting, Epicurean Management, the group behind Dell'Anima and L'Artusi was present to discuss their new Italian concept for Bowery Wine. They're looking to expand to two adjacent storefronts and have a side yard. The kitchen will be nearly half of the restaurant (designed by a James Beard Award-winning kitchen designer). They didn't say much about the food but spoke eloquently about their project: they want to be really good and active neighbors and they seemed to do all their homework with outreach. But they missed one detail—CB3 told Avalon Bay they wouldn't license any more storefronts on their property. And while the old Bowery Wine space was already licensed, the new storefront they're hoping to add was a sticking point.
However, members of the committee felt this was a unique case. They really liked the applicant's track record and they felt the area of 1st Street would greatly benefit from the foot traffic provided by a successful restaurant. Here's hoping they can help Extra Place. They were given a deny unless they agree to basic stipulations.
