Pier Garden Replacing Water Taxi Beach at The Seaport

While the fate of LIC's Water Taxi Beach is still uncertain, today we learn that some changes are also afoot at the South Street Seaport location. DNA Info reports that a new operator, Telly Hatzigeorgiou, is taking over the space with plans for an "upscale German beer garden," complete with outdoor ping-pong and billiards tables and — get this — real trees. Repeat: real trees. The fake sand is also on the way out.

Water Taxi Beach owner Tom Fox apparently lost a lot of money last summer. He notes: "I'm a very good waterfront advocate, but I'm not that good at running restaurants." Hatzigeorgiou likens the new project to the Biergarten at the Standard, and plans on offering bratwurst and other German staples to go along with the beer. It's slated to open at the beginning of May.
