Earlier today we learned that Lucali chef Mark Iacono is in stable condition at a hospital following a brutal stabbing on the street outside of a deli in Carroll Gardens. Now the Daily News reports that he has been charged with felony assault. Benny Geritano, the ex-con (and longtime acquaintance of Iacono) who stabbed the chef, claims that the restaurateur was the instigator, telling the Post: "I didn’t do anything, I’m the victim here." Geritano was arrested and charged with first degree assault last night at another nearby hospital, where he was recovering from wounds on his hands as a result of the incident.
Authorities now think that a bloody kitchen knife found at the scene of the crime may have belonged to Iacono, and not Geritano, who is believed to have used a shorter knife. Of course, details are still foggy on exactly how the fight broke out, and who provoked whom. The Daily News notes that Iacono could be arraigned via video, from his hospital bed, later today. Lucali was closed for business last night, and calls to the restaurant were not picked up this afternoon.
