After an eight month liquor license approval battle, Carlos Quirarte and Matt Kliegman's Westway received the final approval from the State Liquor Authority at a hearing that just concluded, clearing the way for the club to finally open. Located on an isolated part of the West Village in a former strip club near the West Side Highway, Westway has been forced to address issues ranging from traffic to its impact on little leagues that play at nearby fields, not to mention concerns over stripper poles inside the club. After being rejected last month by the SLA, the club managed to clear a major hurdle last week when it convinced the Community Board to support the application. They then went back to the SLA this morning and were formally issued their liquor license. Westway will open sometime in mid May.
