It's official: Ruby's Bar and Grill and six other endangered Coney Island boardwalk businesses will reopen for the summer season this year. The cluster of old-timers faced eviction from landlord Zamperla last fall, and after numerous protests and a lengthy court battle, a deal was signed on Monday night that will keep the bars, restaurants and shops open through November. The only member of the Coney Island 8 that will not be returning is Shoot the Freak — the space it occupied was razed to make way for a new attraction called "Scream Zone." Those zeppoles, hot dogs, and pints of sweet, sweet Ruby's Red will be available on Palm Sunday, April 17, when the boardwalk opens for the season.
