Last night Tenpenny, the new restaurant from former Faustina and Scarpetta GM Jeffrey Tascarella and chef Chris Cipollone, opened to the public in the back of the Gotham Hotel. Given it's a smallish windowless space (save for a lovely skylight) in the back of a Midtown hotel, it's quite the charmer, and area workers may be surprised by the ambition on the menu. It has a long bar serving a list of inventive cocktails, beers, and wine by the glass, and last night it already held a crowd of coworkers, couples, and at least one singleton dining alone with an iPads. Meanwhile in the main part of the dining room Cipollone is serving up items like artichoke fritters and homemade veggie-based (and vegan) chips for snacking, apps like ocean trout crudo and baby lettuce salad, and entrees including pork rack with savory apple pie and porchetta raviolis with egg yolk.
Coming soon: lunch the Tascarella promises will be great for the neighborhood and Sunday suppers, where they'll serve dinner family style for $40 a head including wine. Download a PDF of the dinner menu here.
