On March 9, The Brooklyn Star reopened in the old Lazy Catfish space on Lorimer Street in the 'Burg. Last February The Brooklyn Star had to close after a fire, but now they are back with a bang. Chef Jaoquin Baca's menu is inspired by the South, featuring small dishes such as Fried Pigs Tails with Jalapeno Onion Hush Puppies and larger plates like Bacon Wrapped Trout with Grits and Braised Leeks. Of course criticisms and praises have already made it online; let's get on to the early word.
The Great News: Yelper Marc L. loved the new Brooklyn Star. He was impressed with the full menu on offer until 2AM and even called it his new crew's new favorite neighborhood spot: "We loved every bite. Can't wait to go back to our new favorite neighborhood spot - great food, friendly and attentive service, and stays open late! The Brooklyn Star hits all the right notes for us!" [Yelp]
The Southern Hospitality News: Will Chu of Chu on Food was there on the first day, and made a movie about it! He had mixed opinions on the restaurant. He commented on the service positively: "Southern hospitality was present here. Staff members were friendly and embracing." But he said some of the food was disappointing. He did enjoy some of the dishes though: "Grilled Quail with quail egg, frisee salad, and roasted fennel was close to amazing." He gave the place two stars and said he would come back but sit at the bar. [ChuOnFood]
The So So News: Yelper Natalie C. also has mixed feelings in her first visit to the place. "I wasn't too impressed with the place. Don't get me wrong, the cornbread is fantastic (I tried the bacon/jalapeno version) but the half-rack Dr. Pepper ribs were uninspired." Too bad. She did note that she plans to return to give the Star a second chance. [Yelp]
The Bearded News: Justin Hartung of Zagat Buzz was there on Day One to file some early notes on The Brooklyn Star. He commented on the 20 minute wait to be seated, a sign that "the restaurant was much missed." He reports that the menu is similar to the old menu, but that the "waiter told [them] that chef Joaquin Baca doesn't want the cuisine to be called Southern." Hmm. He also commented on the many bearded and plaid-clad clientele. Will they set a hipster trap in here? [ZagatBuzz]
The Twitterific News: @TheBrooklynStar has been retweeting or tweeting responses to many diners, including @mariacelis who "[had] a ridiculously great dinner @ The Brooklyn Star w/ @jlnoblezada. Quino Baca is back for real." @RozenbergDDS also tweeted that she had "a great dinner at The Brooklyn Star" and later mentioned that the brussel sprouts were amazing. [Twitter]
The Jammin' News: Erin O. penned a jamming review on Yelp of the new Brooklyn Star where she rates things as "the jam," "monster jam" and "motherf*cker." Fair enough. Here's how she feels: "Brussel Sprouts: Monster Jam! I have never met a sprout I don't like but these were cooked perfectly. I almost wanted to lick the bowl... Dr. Pepper Ribs: Motherf*cker! These were like delicious, like so delicious... Chocolate Bread Pudding: Totally a motherfucker. You have to have this. And as of right now it's the only dessert on the menu, so really..you have to have this... The country fried steak and the trout: devoured. I didn't see one last drop on the table of food. The space is a total motherf*cker!" Here here! [Yelp]
