Around this time last year, news broke that Wally Chin, co-owner of Midtown Chinese restaurant (and Eater 38 staple) Chin Chin, was expanding to East 53rd with a new restaurant called Walle. Back then, the pitch was "homestyle Chinese dishes based on more American concepts like burgers." Now, Flo Fab reports that after nearly a year of delays, the project is opening this Sunday.
And it sounds like the concept hasn't changed. Chef Chris Cheung, formerly of Monkey Bar, is preparing a menu of things like foie gras buns, fish and chips, and, keeping with the times, an Asian-style burger served on a pancake bun. Most entrees are priced between $18-$24. As it turns out, the project was put on hold for so long because Wally had some health problems. He tells Flo: "I’m glad I had the restaurant to think of during this time...It kept me going.”
