Tonight, Alex Stupak, a chef who made a name for himself in the pastry departments of cutting edge restaurants Alinea and wd~50, opens his new sizable Mexican joint Empellon in the old Chow space. Why Mexican? Because it's what he likes to eat. And to be honest, it's what a lot of New Yorkers like to eat too, especially when it comes with a large bar stocked with tequila and Negro Modelo on draft. The space itself is divided into two main areas—the front bar room and a second dining room in the back—both covered in artwork and filled with simple black tables and the occasional banquette.
As for the menu, look forward to a selection of ceviches, sopes, salads, and some impressive tacos (beer braised tongue, lamb barbacoa) on homemade tortillas. And make sure to check out the more unexpected offerings like ricotta cheese served over beef with tortillas and mussels with mole. Check out the space above and the menu below.
