La Superior Team Expands in Williamsburg with Cantina Royal

For years, La Superior has been the Mexican restaurant to beat in Williamsburg. The room is fun and the food is cheap, fresh, and slightly more interesting than what's being served at many of the other burrito and taco places in the nabe. It's often packed during peak dinner hours and brunch, but now the restaurant will have a place for the spillover, conveniently located just a few blocks away.

Paper Mag reports that owner Felipe Mendez will open a sister spot called Cantina Royal in the old MonkeyTown space on North 3rd St. at the end of the month. This sounds like a slightly more upscale concept, serving "Mexico-City Style Bistro fare," with a full bar stocked with an extensive tequila collection. There's also going to be a PDR for private events, and Mendez plans to DJ some parties back there, too. Cantina Royal will soft open next week with a grand opening the weekend of February 26.
Update: Little update. Owner Felipe tells Paper that this is not a sister restaurant, but an entirely new project with different partners.
